Re: dukes head hotel

Postby mitch in notts » 12 Oct 2010, 18:49

I have a question re the Dukes Head.

How much of an hotel as opposed to a boarding house was it?

George Jarrett Moy married in 1886 at St Nicholas Chapel.
George was a `Post Boy` of the Duke`s Head.
WHY would he be resident in an hotel?

Thanks

Most big hotels have staff rooms. In the Dukes some of them were behind the round window you can see in the front elevation.
I think they still are Mitch. I should think in the olden days if you lived in they could work you all the longer.
And in the roof like that they would be freezing in the winter and boiling in summer, not something the guests want.

Thanks EWW.
Suppose he could have been some sort of messenger FOR the Dukes` Head rather than an actual Post Office `Post Boy`

Another view of the Globe Hotel crca 1905.
I think the publisher may have done a bit of photo editing with the hotel signage when compared with other pics on this subject?

Still think a copy of this should be erected. Who was John Malam?
