Air Training Corps 42F Squadron

Postby Mivalanchi » 03 Jul 2007, 18:49

During the 40s and 50s the Air Training Corps used to meet above Paradise Chambers where they occupied two floors. There were Admin offices and training rooms plus a drill area which doubled as a .22 rifle range, and during the 50 floods was used as a tempory clothes store.
The following photos were taken at the annual camps.

This photo is of an ATC Norfolk Wing Parade. The Guard of honour (Those with the rifles) was formed by 42F squadron cadets. The officer in front was 'Pop' Freestone, (Teacher at KES, who was also Borough Mayor at one time) The officer on just behind on his left was Pilot Officer Peter Leech (He worked in Coopers drawing office, then later became known a car salesman and known as the Man with the red Waistcoat. He then later ran Wenn's Hotel). To his left with the rifle is Cpl Garwood, whose dad was in the CID. His mum Dorothy (Dolly) Garwood was well known in the community.
Yours truly is just to the right of, and behind the officer on the left of the picture.
We had to practice drill for several weeks beforehand with a drill instructor from RAF Marham. David Barnes is at the rear on the far left, next in middle row is Cadet Lupson, then front row is Mike Butterworth. There were about three hundred cadets on parade that day.

Summer Camp at RAF Feltwell c1954/5 The Barrack Room.
Sitting on table Terry Hood and to his right Peter Wormall. Peter later joined the RAF. Sadly he was killed when the Canberra he was in crashed having just taken off from Marham.

Can anyone please help with the following request I received from the Squadron's C.O today.

Would you have a photograph at all of the old HQ at Paradise Chambers...if you have could I borrow it to scan or could you email me a copy?
Also I am getting some history together of the squadron and wondered if you had any names and addresses or contact numbers of anyone involved /cadets/staff at the squadron during its llifetime .
Any photos or names that you feel wouyld benefit would be appreciated

The squadron will be celebrating 70 years history next year and most likely there will be a re-union of former members.

Are you sure that it was a Canberra that Peter Wormall died in? He was a good friend of mine and I went to his funeral at RAF Marham. As I recall it, he was the co-pilot on a Valiant tanker. They had engine failure whilst taking off for Kenya at 4am one morning and the whole crew were killed.

Peter was the only one who managed to eject. Unfortunately they were not high enough for his parachute to open properly. He came down in a tree and and died of multiple injuries. It was the day after his 22nd birthday and he had just been promoted to Flying Officer.

It was doubly sad because his only relative was his widowed mother, whom he supported financially.

I've just had another look at that photo of the barrack room at Feltwell. the only other people there that I can remember in it were Doughty, to the left of Terry Hood and Emmerson, to the right of Peter Wormall. Their first names escape me.

70 years On - Then & Now

Image

Right of front row = 'Pop' Freestone

Image

Back Far Right = Geof Stinton,
6th from right = Syd Plowright
7th from right = Peter Leech
9th from right = Bob Hammond
10th from right = Michael Langwade
11th from right = Tony Williamson

42F (Kings Lynn) Sqn has begun its 70th Anniversary celebrations.
On December 14th 1938, young men from the area were called forward to set up a Air Defence Cadet Corps to help with recruitment for the RAF. These young men were photographed in the Stone Hall in the Town Hall, Kings Lynn.

On December 14th 2008 42F Kings Lynn squadron invited all ex members of the squadron and along with present staff and cadets the photograph from 70 years ago was recreated.

There were cadets from the first days of the squadron and after reminiscing over old photographs and meeting friends from long ago there were all called to form up along with present cadets to recreate the old photograph from 1938.

Everyone was then asked to stay on for some light lunch along with the Mayor of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk and some more reminiscing.

This was the first in a long line of events to do with the 70th Anniversary of the squadron. The next event will be a Time Capsule that will be buried on the squadron site on January 2nd and then ATC Sunday parade on February 8th 2009 where 42F Kings Lynn squadron will be joined by other local ATC squadrons as well as the ex- cadets.
