May 31st
According to "official history", the last battle on English soil occurred as armed Kentish peasants clashed with troops at Bossenden Woods (1838). They were led by the King of Gypsies, John Tom, the son of a Cornish innkeeper. All relevant to a Grand National Holiday.
Appropriate as today is a Bank Holiday.

Daniel Defoe is forced to stand in the pillory in front of Temple Bar for writing "The shortest way with Dissenters" a seditious pamphlet.
Fun, and friendly crowds gather and pelt him with flowers instead of the customary mud and rotten vegetables .(1703)

1752, the adoption in England of the Gregorian Calendar removes 11 days, the 3rd to the 13th. English workers riot, demanding back the time stolen from them by the authoities.
