Mimosa Rocks NSW
Image

The paddle steamer Mimosa, owned by the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company, sailed from Two Fold Bay,( Eden) on 18th September 1863 to Sydney. It struck uncharted rocks about 15km north of Tathra (between Tathra and Bermagui- see map). There were two fatalities and it took the captain several hours through the thick bushland from the shore edge to reach the nearest telegraph station to raise the alarm. Despite a thorough search of the area around the wreck, the bodies of the deceased were never recovered. The area around takes its name from the paddle steamer, Mimosa Rocks National Park.

Beechworth, Victoria. The Courthouse and Jail where the notorius Ned Kelly was held after the shootout at Glenrowan , before he was taken to Melbourne for his trial and subsequent execution. The Telegraph Office is in the far background.

Following the recent very extreme weather conditions in New South Wales our family at Tarraganda have been cut off from the nearest town, Bega by floodwaters. However it has brought some light relief especially for the children as the creek which runs through the lower end of their grounds has now become a vast boating lake.

A while since I posted any from Oz.
Back to the Melbourne Trams.
Here is a D2 type travelling eastwards along Swanston Street from Flinders Street station.
As I mentioned in a previous note Melbourne has a tram system of around 250km.

The Great Ocean Road (B100) stretches from Queenscliff at the entrance to port Phillip Bay through to the town of Portland, the first settlement in Victoria (1834).It follows the coast bordering the Bass Strait and then the Southern Ocean for a distance of some 400km. This area was sometime known as the shipwreck coast and many ships bringing emigrants to Australia from the 1850s perished on the final leg towards Port Philip (Melbourne). So treacherous was this area that at least a dozen lighthouses were built between Queenscliff and Cape Nelson,( beyond Portland.)
Just east of Port Campbell in the Port Campbell National Park is a series of limestone stacks rising out of the ocean and known as The Twelve Apostles, the tallest rising some 45 metres above the sea. Erosion has taken place and not long after we took this photo in 2005 one of the stacks collapsed into the sea.

Not sure about this but I think that area is where a programme called Worlds Best Motorcycle Rides visited. If it is it is somewhere I would love to ride.
