Hello Pat, I think you will find they are called Tradescantia, your local garden centre should be able to tell you which variety. If you google 'purple tradescantia', there are some pictures identical yours. Hope this helps.,T

I think Ms Marple has scored again. I think it is this one. "Tradescantia Purple profusion"

Thanks so much, be off to Garden Centre tomorrow, I have another plant name poser, hopefully you will be able to help name this plant, seen on Friday's Gardener's World, it's a border plant, quite tall, and the flower looks like a thistle flower to me? Sorry the pic isn't brilliant.
Fingers crossed.

The tradescantia can be a bit invasive and take over a bed. There are white flowered types and a purple flowered with yellow foliage and these are not so invasive.

Hello again Pat, this could be Cirsium Rivulare, or Brook Thistle, going by what I can see on your picture. Google the name anyway and you will get a better picture of it. Hope it's the right one. T. By the way, an old friend used to grow Tradescantia and they come up every year, the colour is beautiful.

I'm sure EW's pic is the right plant, but here is a different view, just so you can compare. T

Re the Tradescantia Purple Profusion it doesn't seem available in England, all the sites that pop up are in USA, unless I've missed it this year for British season, I will have to check with a couple of garden centres.
Don't think Care Home will part with a piece of theirs lol.

Really pleased I could help Pat. As the Tradescantia is so prolific, I'm sure if you asked the care home very nicely, they would be happy to share a clump with you, that's what gardening is all about :) Good luck .... T........ps, do let us know if you are successful in your search.
