Help with the Gents please!

Postby Carol gent » 13 Oct 2020, 07:51

Hello,
I have just recently joined this forum with hopes of help with my family search.
Family name is Gent, they all seem to be called William, and they all farmed.
My grandad was Sydney Gent, who was 14years old on the 1893 census, lived at Fern Farm, Goveners marsh.
My uncle was born at Balalava Farm,Terrington st Clements
My dad was born at Home Farm Swaffam.
Also family at Inmere Farm, Snettisham.
I know this is a big ask, but any information would be amazing! Thank you, Carol Gent.

Thanks for reply, yes I’ve seen that. There seems to be lots of Gents in Norfolk, mariner Gents and farming Gents!
I have seen briefly on forum, something about dummy airfield at Fern Farm, but I can’t find it again!!
Any suggestions?
Thanks Carol.

Hi Dab7
Thanks for your reply, were they farmers? I haven’t come across a Malcom or Fred but I’ve only done parents and there children. All farmers, all called William in Terrington st Clements or very close. I’m grateful for any info.
Carol.

Hi Carol
According to the 1891c George Gent chr. 10.2.1849 T/S/Clements & Mary Ann Charlotte nee Block b 1848 T/S/C are at Governors Marsh with Charlotte Jane b 1876 & Frederick William b 1879. George & Mary A. C. married 1871.
George's parents were William b 1805c T/S//C & Ann nee Case b 1807c Doddington Lincs married in 1839 Downham Nfk. In 1861 they are at Scanners Land Field T/S/C with Baker b 1842, Ann b 1847 George b1849, Jane b 1850.

Olive Ada 's parents were William b 1877 Downham & Mary Elizabeth nee Thorpe b 1883 Stow Bardolph they married 1qtr 1902 Downham Nfk
I can't find a Sydney Gent to fit the one you have at 14yrs ?

Hi desira37.
OMG! That’s wonderful, I didn’t know about the early dates, names looked familiar.
Grandparents is all correct, William was my dad, and yes Jon married twice,
I don’t know why I have trouble with Sydney? The only info I have ,is what you found.but it may be two different spellings of his name, “Y” or “I” ?
Many thanks
Carol.

Some information from electoral registers.
In 1920 & 1922 a Sydney Gent lived at Hall Farm, Cressingham and also owned land in Threxton; in 1921 a Sydney Gent, along with a Wilfred Ernest Gent, was living at Home Farm, South Pickenham; in 1925/6/7 a Sydney Gent had premises in Heacham (his abode then was Eaton Farm, Sedgeford). Sidney (note the change in spelling) continued to live at Eaton Farm until at least 1931. Olive Ada Gent also appears at Eaton Farm from 1929 onwards. Between 1927 & 1929 (at least) Sidney also held land in Snettisham.
In the 1939 register, Sidney Gent is the farm manager at Balaclava Farm, Terrington St. Clement; his d.o.b. is 10th July 1893 and he is also an ARP warden; Olive Ada Gent, born 15th March 1902, is an ambulance driver for the Red Cross; William A. Gent, born 7th March 1924, is a farm assistant; finally, there is Jon O. Gent, born 27th Dec. 1935; one other record is redacted.
From 1927 to 1931 (at least), Thomas, Rosa & William Gent were living at Inmere Farm, Snettisham, as well as holding land in Sedgeford.

Sydney (or Sidney) was the son of Thomas GENT, b. Terrington St. Clement Q1 1861, mother's maiden name Portler, and Rosa MILLHOUSE, b. 1860 in Woolsthorpe, Lincs. Thomas & Rosa were married at All Saints Church, Knipton, Leics. in Q4 1889 (banns were read on 13th, 20th & 27th October). The 1901 census places Thomas & Rosa, with Sydney and siblings Evelyn, Wilfred & William at Governors Marsh; in 1911 they are shown to be at Fern Farm.
