School at Thoresby college?

Postby littleoldboy » 12 Nov 2009, 11:37

My stepfather told me he went to school at Thoresby College. He and his sister went there until he left aged 14, so that would have been between approx 1925 and 1935.
Does anyone know anything about this school? I assume it was private as he thought his father paid a guinea a term. He didn't know why he didn't go to a state school - his parents weren't wealthy. He lived in North Everard Street.
He says they also had boarders and he thinks it closed down at the start of WW2

Talking to my stepfather this morning and the topic of his schooling came up again.
He remembers the school flag having stripes and a crown in each corner. He also remembered having to stay in for not doffing his cap to a lady in the town.
I hope that someone new to the forum might have some info or direct me to where I might find it

Do not know about the flag LOB but asked Dr Paul Richards today about the school
and it operated until just before WW2. The last Head teacher was a Miss Powley. A
friend of Paul's a miss Trenaworth of the King street Trenaworth's was also a pupil
there. Hope to come up with the flag at sometime.
I do not want thanks for any research I am able to help out with. I just love doing it.

Another source has confirmed that Miss Margaret Powley succeeded her mother in 1936 when it was described as a "Seminary for young girls".
So what was my stepfather doing there?

That would mean it was for training theology students then. Was he a vicar?

That's one option, but female priests or rabbis weren't likely at that time. a looser definition is just a place of learning for the young.
He was a fireman and then a driver of steam trains so his fire making skills would have been more use down below
