Demolition

Postby teddybear1959 » 28 Oct 2006, 23:37

Hi All

Looking at the picture of the demolition................

I can see Greyfriar's Tower over the row of houses, so are the ones still standing, Hillington Square? This ran parallell to Millfleet and Union Street ran at a 45 degree angle. You can see the School and the Tower at the end of Union Street on the other photograph.

Sadly, I don't remember any of the houses in this area, just the chip shop on the Fleet where we used to get our chips on a Saturday.

I see what you mean about the demolition pic teddy. It looks like the row still standing is, maybe, Millfleet Terrace looking across a flattened Hillington Square.

We haven't got an old Hillington Sq thread yet, I hope something turns up. 8)

1886 - a map to help get an angle on the above demolition pic.

When we pulled that area down, we left a couple of the old houses
standing and used them for storage untill site huts were erected.
You can see the school so not much left of the building that side
of the square.

Would number 3 Union Street be in any of these photos? My GG Grandfather used to live there in 1881

Where was Union Street located? it looks like it was to the east of All Saints Church, where the community centre is located now...?

Ah, sorry I think I have found it. I got confused by the little stub of Providence Street thats left and which goes on for a distance in the 1886 map.
From what I can gather Union Street was a few hundred feet north west of All Saints...?
