St James Street: Tower Cafe

Postby themorph » 29 Mar 2021, 22:51

I have attached 2 pictures relating to the Tower Cafe at 55 St James Street. I think they were taken late 40's - early 50's but someone should be able to date them by the foundations bricks of the new police station to the right of the picture. The Tower Cafe was owned by my parents (Ted Rye, Ida Rye) and they also owned the Tower Restaurant in New Conduit Street. The staff picture shows Ted Rye standing tall at the very back and Ida Rye on the right holding the dog. Her mother, Gran Dunning is the elderly lady on the Front Row. I am not sure of the names of the others.

The police station was built between 1953 and 1955. Did my aunt Barbara Rye work there at one time?

There are earlies pictures of the shop in this St James Street thread. (You may have seen them though.)

The 1953-55 date makes sense.

I'm afraid I don't know the names of the other people, but I doubt that Barbara Rye worked there. If she did, it wouldn't have been because she was a family member. There are several Rye families in Lynn, and I'm pretty sure that there wasn't a Barbara in my side of the family. :(

Barbara was my uncle George Rye's wife. My mothers side of the family are all Rye's from Middleton.

Afraid it doesn't ring any bells. Of course, that may say more about my memory rather than the truth about any family relationship. My parents/uncles/aunts lived in Lynn, Babingley, East Winch.

Ev
I think we do have a connection. Grandfather Stephen's brother Edward married Martha Frances Ewer 24.8.1882 Weasenham St Peter and their son Edward James Rye married Rachel Dorothy Smith 1916 Walsingham reg dist.
I have them both on my tree but not the marriage of Edward James & Rachel Smith.
Lets hope we get a reply to confirm.

So Edward Rye and Rachel Smith were my paternal grandparents. I have vague memories of them, but I didn't remember their names.
