Holkham sand dunes

Postby littleoldboy » 17 Mar 2021, 19:31

My wife is reading a book called "Lady in Waiting" by Anne, Lady Glenconner, eldest daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester. It describes the Holkham estate at the end of WW2 as having a prisoner of war camp in the Park, firstly for Italians and then Germans. After the war the beach was out of bounds as it was used for target practice by the RAF. A lot of London buses and taxis were used as targets. She says they were just covered over with sand and the remains are still buried beneath a big sand dune.
My wife was disappointed I didn't know anything about this!
Can anyone confirm his?

There is a great lot of old military stuff along that stretch of coast LOB. I wonder if this could be some of it.

certainly there is still evidence found now on the Holkham Beaches, the info on the targets used , is more elusive. http://holkhamnnr.blogspot.com/2015/10/holkham-bombs.html and https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/36952/holkham_field_firing_range.pdf so its evident that a bomb, logically , is dropped by an aircraft... and grenades are thrown from the ground, and both happened at Holkham :) about the only visual evidence of wartime norfolk coast use, that is not visible now, is the 1946 RAF air map, which gives some idea of physical ground use at Holkham beach, distinct defences actually on the beach and such ground markings typical of target practice.http://www.historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/mapexplorer/
