Gaywood hairdressers c.1957/8

Postby Zoolandia » 11 Apr 2020, 14:34

Hi,
I'm trying to find out the name and location of a hairdressers in Gaywood Clock at the end of 1957 and into 1958 (and possibly for years later). All I know is that it was in or near Bishop's Terrace, so very close to where the clock is now located. Apparently it was next door to a cake shop which had a restaurant upstairs. Sorry for this strange request, this is all the information that I have!

There are none listed under Hairdressers or under Ladies Hairdresssers in the 1957 Kelly's Directory. Further, there is nothing listed in Lynn Road Gaywood, that is from 161 Gaywood road to 1 Wootton road. The nearest are Ernest Shipp 57 Wootton Road and Mrs Iris Dawson 83 Wootton Road.

Carlo Napoltana had a barbers on the opposite side of the road to this building. There are pictures on here of it. His wife had a hairdressers
in this building. The little cake shop was next door. I think Harry Lushers daughter took over the haidressers but cannot remember here name.
Harry was the landlord of the Capt Vancouver pub and the Woolpack on Gaywood road. Pictures of both pubs on here.
Come to think of it the girl lusher may have been called Jeannie.
Peter Dawson ran the Lobster Pot fresh fish shop.

You are quite correct Zoolandia, there was a ladies hairdressers and it was next to the cake shop. I used to get my hair done there in the early sixties. My friend Jeanne Lusher worked there ( daughter of Harry, the landlord of Captain Vancouver amongst other pubs) will find the name for you. Unless someone beats me to it :D :D

The little cake shop and cafe was called John Deens when I was a kid. I think it was run by two elderly ladies. When I say elderly
they could have been about 30, but that look ancient to a kid :-D

I could do with a hairdresser right now. Mine is all frizz after having to wash it myself.
Goodness knows what it will look like by the time the shop opens again.

It was Ms Green. The door was to the left hand side I think. Still cannot remember Carlo's wifes name who owned it though.
Young Charlie, Carlos brother has a barbers about four doors from it. When next walking by I will pop in and ask him.
If I remeber to that is.

This was Carlos shop. He kept the name Charles after his dad died. More old gaywood pictures in this link.
