hi not so sure. queen st alley was lower and square(and at my grans)
see pic (was also narrower than nelson st alley.)
think yours is nelson street and this is queen street one (back of three crowns yard)
Image
both were known as devils alley also queen street one was longer than it is now due to rebuildin(was built up by wharehousing all the way through to quayside then)

This is a nice historic street, with a historic ally, then someone thinks it's a great idea to stick a conspicuous white piece of pipe/coduit in the ally. How thick can you get :smt097

Found this about Devils Ally in a book by GG Coulton ---

---- True, daylight now falls upon Devils Ally, which once ran under cover from Nelson Street to the Quayside, and showed at its darkest point a queer cobble in the pavement shaped like a gigantic human foot.----

Wonder what happened to the queer cobble :smt035

Isn't Devils Ally where Black Shouk the dog of nightmares is supposed to haunt?

My farther says they used to say it was haunted but he does not know by what. He says when he was a lad, not to many people liked to use the ally at night  .

OG,
us Friars kids used to dare each other to walk, not run through the ally...it was a kind of bravery test! we knew all about Black Shouk!
