Lynn Rovers

Does anyone have any information on Lynn Rovers FC? All I know is that, in 1896, they were playing in a local league and that their opponents included Lynn North End.

Glad to be of help Ken, I've just noticed that one of the forwards was a J Jary. I'm wondering if this was one of my grand dads family, Jim Jary? T

T, I'm afraid I can't help you with Jim Jary, but I do recognize Anderson, Horsley, Withers, Dexter & Pearman as being teammates of Harry Taylor (of "paper factory" fame). It's likely, therefore, that your relative (if, indeed, it's him) and mine were acquainted. Incidentally, I see that there was a Taylor who acted as linesman at the match on 10/10/1886, so there's another line of enquiry to follow. That's the trouble with this family / local history lark: always something new to research.

By the way, I didn't realize that the EDP covered Lynn football in such depth; I assumed that was left to the Lynn Advertiser and the Lynn News. Since the EDP for much of the period 1870-1911 is covered by the BNA, that gives me another potential source of info.[/b]

Hi Ken, don't know if you have seen this, it is a newspaper cutting from Nov 1896, don't know which paper though. There is also a report in the South Wales Daily news, of the 17th November 1896, telling how Harry collided with a chap called Hornigold, of the opposing team and died in the night from his injuries. So sad he was only 20. Hope this is not being insensitive. T

On Saturday 8th December 1894, Lynn Rovers Second played Paper Factory. (I have posted this also on the Paper Factory thread.)

According to the Lynn Advertiser (21/11/1896), Harry Taylor's manager, Frank Mackey had been told that Harry "had given up football, but was pressed to play in this match". The expenses of Harry's funeral were defrayed by public subscription.
